If someone is at your door with a gun are you legally allowed to shoot them being that they are still outside? Are you able to shoot through the door?

-From Darren R.

Answer: If you are in fear for your life or serious bodily injury, then the answer is yes. That is the main question to ask yourself. If you think the guy is going to kill you, then you can certainly defend yourself. But, if you don’t think he’s a true threat, then don’t shoot him. Of course, I’m not a lawyer, so seek proper legal advice.

In this politically uncertain environment is there any advice you would give to help preserve my personal liberty (currently living in Virginia, USA) or alternately is there a province or country to escape to where personal freedom and privacy are respected?

-From David G.

Answer: Each year, 6.6 million Americans move from the U.S. to another country for many different reasons. If you are considering moving, I would try to find a country that will allow gun ownership, along with other basic freedoms we enjoy in the US.

One place to consider is Costa Rica. This nation tends to lean conservative when it comes to political issues and is only a three-hour flight from Florida. Getting a temporary residence visa to live there is a simple process as long as you can prove you have income such as a retirement account.

Costa Rica has been friendly with the U.S. for over 150 years and a move to this nation would probably be the least amount of culture shock. Plus, Costa Rica has reliable infrastructure including highways and airports so you won’t be living in a third-world country.

America is the greatest country in the world and I have no plans to leave, but I know a lot of people do. Personally, I would move to Wyoming or Utah or Idaho where freedom is still respected.

What do you think about the .17 HMR round?

-From William W.

Answer: The .17 HMR, also known as Hornady Magnum Rimfire, is a relatively new rimfire round. It first came out in 2002 and is fairly popular. The reason folks like it is because it’s a very fast and accurate rimfire cartridge.

The round typically has a 17-grain bullet, but you can find them in 20 and 15.5 grain. The .17 HMR is available in hollow point, soft tip, and full metal jacket. The speed and accuracy of the round makes it perfect for hunting small game such as rabbit. It’s also a popular round for target shooting. (I would not rely on it for self-defense.)

Is it true that no conceal-carry license is required in church?

-From Richard L.

Answer: Laws relating to concealed carry inside churches vary from state to state. If the state requires you to have a concealed carry license then it applies to churches as well. With that being said, in most states, a private establishment such as a church can ban firearms from being on their property. Similar to a homeowner telling someone they can’t bring a gun into their home.

I am investigating home security systems. What are some things I should look for in a good home security system?

-From Bobby M.

Answer: I would decide whether you want to install a “Do It Yourself” system or have a professional company come to your home and install it for you.

Before deciding this, I would check with your local police department and ask them if they respond to residential alarms.

In most large cities, police don’t respond to residential alarms and the company providing your security system usually has a security guard respond to the alarm, so you would want a reputable company.

Now, as far as what you want in an alarm system, make sure you get sensors on every door and every window of your house… get motion sensors for the inside of the house and get glass-break sensors for your windows.

Don’t forget to get security cameras for the outside of your home and motion sensor lights around your home

I’ve been a realtor for 20 years. I always carry pepper spray just in case. How can I tell if an older can of pepper spray is still good and pressurized?

-From Karen L.

Answer: The best thing to do is go by the expiration date on the can of pepper spray. Even if you’ve never used the pepper spray, once it’s reached the expiration date, I recommend replacing it with a new one just to be safe.

Pepper spray is too cheap to not replace when it expires. Of course, if you don’t want to do that, then you could do a test spray in a safe location.
