From William K: What radios do you recommend that do not require a license to use?

Answer: I personally use the Baofeng UV-5R radio. These sell for about $30 on Amazon and are small, making them great radios for an emergency. They don’t require a license to operate, however, they can function as a HAM radio and if you were going to use it in that fashion you would need a license. These are great for use as a two-way radio and they are inexpensive enough that you can purchase a few to give out to family members.

From John A: Can solar panels, deployed, withstand an EMP event?

Answer: If an EMP occurred, the solar panels themselves would likely survive and continue to function. However, the problem you would run into is that most likely the wires and solar charger that are connected to the panels would not work. The thing about an EMP is that we truly don’t know what electronics will still work. It’s one of those things where we just don’t know how bad things would get and hopefully we never find out.

From Walt P: How much cash should I have on hand to weather a financial crisis?

Answer: At the minimum, I recommend having at least 6 months’ worth of living expenses in your bank and at least one month’s expenses in cash stored in a home safe. The fact is, you never know when a disaster could strike or even a loss of employment. I strongly encourage everyone to save up their money because we all know that cash is king, especially during an emergency.

From Dale R: Other than a gun, what is the best thing I could use to protect myself, my family and my property?

Answer: You could use a tactical pen, a stun gun flashlight, a knife, a baseball bat. However, a gun is always my first choice. After all, if someone is invading my home trying to kill me, I want the best tool to stop them and that’s a gun.

From Carol Z: Do you have tips on storing food with a shorter shelf life?

Answer: If you decide to stock up on food with shorter shelf-life, the best thing to do is rotate the food out. Let’s say you want to stock up on peanut butter, then you would rotate the peanut butter through your normal usage. So, each time you need a new jar simply take one from food storage and then buy one at the store to replace the one you used from food storage.

From Ryan R: Do you have a preference for pepper spray?

Answer: I would check out the brand Sabre, this is a quality brand that is commonly carried by law enforcement. They make all different strengths and sizes of pepper spray and they sell their products to the general public. With that being said, I’m not the biggest fan of pepper spray. It’s the type of tool that can be unpredictable and can actually backfire. If it’s used outside the wind can easily blow it back towards you, hurting you in the process. It’s also difficult to use accurately, however, it’s definitely better than not having anything at all.
